The Ultimate Indian Road Trip
The 479 km Manali-Leh Highway is not just a road — it's a rite of passage. Crossing five high passes, including the legendary Tanglang La at 5,328m, this route takes you through some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. Whether you're on a Royal Enfield or in a Fortuner, this drive will change you.
The Route
Day 1: Manali → Jispa (140 km, 6 hours)
Cross the Atal Tunnel (world's longest highway tunnel at 9.02 km) and climb to Sissu, then Jispa for the night. The Bhaga River valley is stunning.
Day 2: Jispa → Sarchu → Pang (130 km, 7 hours)
Cross Baralacha La (4,890m) and descend to Sarchu. Continue to Pang through the mesmerising Gata Loops — 21 hairpin bends that test both driver and machine.
Day 3: Pang → Leh (170 km, 7 hours)
The pièce de résistance — cross the More Plains (a high-altitude plateau that looks like Mars), Tanglang La, and descend through Upshi to Leh along the Indus River.
Must-Stop Experiences
- Rohtang Pass — If the Atal Tunnel is closed, the old Rohtang route offers jaw-dropping snow walls and glacier views
- Deepak Tal — A jewel-blue lake between Keylong and Baralacha La, perfect for a roadside chai break
- Pang camp — At 4,600m, the tent camps here serve the most memorable hot Maggi noodles you'll ever eat
- More Plains — 40 km of arrow-straight road across a featureless high-altitude plain. Stop, breathe, and feel insignificantly small
- Magnetic Hill — Just before Leh, this optical illusion makes it look like vehicles roll uphill. It's touristy but fun
In and Around Leh
Pangong Tso — The 134 km lake that changes from blue to turquoise to green. Made famous by 3 Idiots, it's a 5-hour drive from Leh.
Nubra Valley — Cross Khardung La (one of the world's highest motorable passes) to reach sand dunes, double-humped Bactrian camels, and the ancient Diskit Monastery.
Leh Old Town — Explore the 17th-century Leh Palace, colourful monasteries, and the bustling Main Bazaar for Ladakhi souvenirs.
Hemis & Thiksey Monasteries — Hemis hosts Ladakh's largest festival (June/July), while Thiksey's morning prayer ceremony at dawn is deeply moving.
Essential Preparation
- Season: The highway is open mid-June to mid-October only
- Permits: Inner Line Permits needed for Pangong, Nubra, and Hanle (obtainable online or in Leh)
- AMS: Acute Mountain Sickness is real. Spend 2 days acclimatising in Leh before any excursions
- Fuel: Fill up at every petrol pump — distances between stations can be 200+ km
- Medical: Carry Diamox (for altitude), ORS sachets, and a basic first-aid kit
- Bike rental: Royal Enfield Himalayan can be rented in Manali from ₹1,500/day
Srinagar-Leh Highway Alternative
The 434 km NH1 from Srinagar offers a different flavour — crossing Zoji La pass, the moonscape of Drass (second coldest inhabited place on Earth), and the magnetic Kargil region. It's easier on altitude acclimatisation since the ascent is more gradual.
